Mix & Remix , real name Philippe Becquelin (born April 6, 1958 in Saint-Maurice VS ; † December 19, 2016 ), was a Swiss cartoonist and illustrator . He created numerous caricatures on current affairs, including for L'Hebdo , and he worked for the French-speaking Swiss TV magazine Infrarouge .

Career

Philippe Becquelin, whose father was an avid comic book reader, began drawing as a child. He attended high school in Saint-Maurice, but dropped out of school a year before he graduated from high school . He attended the art school in Sion for six months and in 1984 obtained a diploma in painting from the cantonal art school in Lausanne . Since he realized his pictures together with his wife, who met in the same year, they chose the pseudonym Mix & Remix . After giving up painting, he continued to use this artist name.

Becquelin began working with Frédéric Pajak to illustrate the weekly L'Eternité ; this appeared for six months. The influence of Pajak, who saw in him “the only French-speaking Swiss draftsman who knows a language”, brought him to satirical drawing. Becquelin designed the cartoon Histoires mécaniques for the weekly newspaper L'Hebdo from 1992 to 1998 , before drawing on current affairs.

For a job as a warehouse clerk in a plush fabrics -Importgeschäft and in a T-shirt printing company he worked from 1991 to 2001 on the clock tower of Lausanne Notre-Dame cathedral - he called every night, 22-2 am, the time in all four cardinal points. This tradition, which has existed since 1405, goes back to the fire watch : "C'est le guet, il a sonné dix!" - "It's the night watchman, ten has struck!"

He then managed to make a living from drawing. In 1995 he received a sponsorship award from the Canton of Valais and since 1998 has been responsible for an entire page of the newspaper L'Hebdo . He illustrated the Comprendre la Suisse book series for the Lausanne textbook publisher “Éditions Loisirs et Pédagogie” (LEP) ; individual volumes have also been published in German. In 2013 the publisher received the “Democracy Prize” from the New Helvetic Society for this . Since 2013 he has also been drawing for the Sunday edition of Le Matin . Further engagements resulted, among others, for the daily Le Courrier and the Italian weekly Internazionale . In 2016 he was awarded the “Prix du rayonnement” by the Vaudois Cultural Foundation.

Mix & Remix died of pancreatic cancer in 2016 . His family announced his death on the morning of December 20th with one of his cartoons: "You have three months to live." - "Three months?! ... that's long!"
