Mizumoto Park

The Mizumoto Park ( Japanese 水元公園 , Mizumoto-kōen ) is a public park in the district of Katsushika of Tokyo .

Overview

Until 1975 the park was called Toritsu Edo-gawa suikyō shizen kōen ( 都 立 江 戸 川 水 郷 自然 公園 , German: "Prefectural Nature Park of the Edo-gawa water places"), which indicated that this park has the system of a water place. It is the only park of its kind in Tokyo. At the beginning of the Edo period , a basin was created here that could absorb the floods of the Tone-gawa, which was then flowing nearby . In normal years, this area was able to supply the surrounding area with water for rice cultivation, which gave the park its current short name, which means "water origin". The water arm itself bears the name Koaidame ( 小 合 溜 ), something like "small congestion ". The park, originally 650,000 m² in size, has been extended to Saitama Prefecture in recent years . The following systems can be distinguished in the park:

  • Kirschbaum-Allee: The avenue uses the outer dam and extends over a length of 4 km. 600 trees of the well-known "Somei-yoshino" variety were planted.
  • Poplar avenues: From 1973 about 2000 poplars were planted along various paths, which are more typical of Hokkaidō . They are now over 20 m high.
  • Metasequoien forest: 1900 trees of this rare species were planted at the “Place to commemorate 100 years of Meiji”. In autumn, the needles turn brick-red; once they have fallen off, fine twigs are a special feature.
  • Large lawn: it is slightly raised compared to the surroundings and about 10 hectares in size. There is an open-air stage on one side.
  • Aquatic plant garden: Here can be found in the pond water lilies , water rice , water canna , water lilies , cattails , reeds . There are also different types of irises such as the Japanese or the Asian .
  • Iris garden: This garden can be reached via a small bridge. With a total area of 9,500 m², 80 varieties and 200,000 flowers, it is the largest plant in the prefecture.
  • A small bird sanctuary is also part of the park.
