2-Hydroxyisobutyric acid is a derivative of isobutyric acid which is substituted in the 2-position by a hydroxyl group .

properties

With the additional hydroxyl group, α-hydroxycarboxylic acids are generally more acidic than their parent compounds. The pK s value of the 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid is 4.04, whereas it is for the isobutyric about 4.86. The acidity of 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid hardly differs from lactic acid (2-hydroxypropionic acid) at 3.90.
