Isobutyric acid is a chemical compound used as an additive in the cosmetics and food industries and as an intermediate in general in the chemical industry. It is an isomer of butyric acid .

Extraction and presentation

Isobutyric acid can be produced, among other things, by the oxidation of isobutyraldehyde .

use

Isobutyric acid is found as an additive in cosmetics. It is suitable as a polar solvent for various chemical reactions. The salts of isobutyric acid are used in textile auxiliaries, tanning agents, stabilizers and preservatives. Isobutyric acid can be used as an intermediate in the manufacture of herbicides as well as paint and plastic raw materials. The esters of isobutyric acid with monofunctional alcohols are used as fragrances and flavorings (e.g. some of the compounds have a pineapple-like odor).

safety instructions

Vapors cause irritation of the eyes, the respiratory tract, the lungs and the skin, narcotic effects through high concentrations. Contact with the liquid is severely irritating to the eyes and skin.
