The Mnich (German monk ) is a mountain in the Polish High Tatras with 2068 m. Due to its pointed shape, it is one of the best known and most popular mountains in Poland for climbers. From its summit there is one of the most beautiful panoramic views in the Tatras , which extends far over the Fischsee valley in which it is located. To the south of it is the similarly built but less spectacular Rear Monk ( Zadni Mnich ).

The mountain peak consists of three peaks: the main peak, the Mniszek (German: Mönchturm, 2045 m above sea level) and the altar boy .

Location and surroundings

Below the summit is the Meerauge mountain lake . The lower Mönchscharte ( Niżnią Mnichową Przełączką ) separates it from the summit of the Mönchkoppe ( Mnichowa Kopa ). In the mountain at an altitude of around 1900 there are numerous caves: Studnia w Mnichu , Jaskinia przy Studni w Mnichu , Mnichowy Komin and Studnia przy Mnichowym Kominie .

etymology

The Polish name Mnich means monk translate. The shape of the summit reminded the local population of the sharp point of a monk's hood. The name was first used by Gabriel Rzączyński in 1721 . Other peaks in the High Tatras that have a similar shape are known after him: Zadni Mnich , Żabi Mnich and Roztocki Mnich .

Flora and fauna

Despite its height, the monk has a colorful flora and fauna. Numerous plant species occur, especially high alpine flowers and grasses. In addition to insects and mollusks and birds of prey, marmots and chamois also visit the summit.

Culture

The Mnich is an integral part of Polish folklore, similar to the Matterhorn in Switzerland. He is the subject of numerous poems, legends and films.

Ascents

First ascents:

After the German occupation of Poland, the Nazis placed a large wooden swastika on the north wall, visible from afar. The mountaineers Łapiński and Paszucha loosened the chains on a climbing tour, so that it fell down in the next storm.

tourism

The Mnich is an extremely popular peak with climbers, especially its almost 700 meter high north face. However, there are no marked hiking trails leading to the summit. The south face of the Dolina za Mnichem valley is the easiest ascent, the north-east face above the Meerauge mountain lake is the most difficult . The Schronisko PTTK nad Morskim Okiem mountain hut is a suitable starting point for an ascent from the valleys .
