The project choir modus novus was founded in 1988 by Fritz ter Wey . The mixed choir mainly works on choral music from the 20th and 21st centuries.
One of the first projects was the performance of the oratorio The Exhaustion of the World by Mauricio Kagel in the Cologne Philharmonic . All CDs recorded so far (with compositions such as Friede auf Erden by Arnold Schönberg or the Mass for two four-part choirs by Frank Martin ) are dedicated to the choral music of this time.
But literature from earlier eras is also part of the choir's repertoire , with a further focus on romantic choral music. In addition to numerous works by Johannes Brahms , Hugo Wolf and Max Reger , modus novus has developed a program for women composers that is characterized by rarely heard pieces by Lili Boulanger , Fanny Hensel , Clara Schumann and Jacqueline Fontyn .
Modus novus has performed several times as an oratorio and opera choir at the Festival van Vlaanderen in Antwerp . In this context, in collaboration with the Young Choir Aachen and the Anima Eterna orchestra under the overall direction of Jos van Immerseel, the CD of the youth opera Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Die Hochzeit des Camacho was created . Modus novus has made numerous concert tours, including to Poland and CIS countries in 1995 .
In the autumn of the same year the choir accepted an invitation to the Copenhagen Choir Festival. There, the ensemble provided the studio choir of the conducting master 's course as “choir in residence”, which was led by the Estonian conductor Tõnu Kaljuste . The choir receives new impulses again and again through the occasional cooperation with important guest conductors (including from Great Britain , Belgium and the USA ).
Successful participation in major competitions began in 1992 with victory in the mixed choir category at the international choir competition in Tours . In 1994 modus novus emerged from the 4th German Choir Competition in Fulda as the winner in the special category of mixed choirs. As the title holder, at the invitation of the German Music Council , the choir gave a special concert at the 5th German Choir Competition in Regensburg in 1998 , centered around Figure Humaine by Francis Poulenc . In the competition in Marktoberdorf , known for the high level of performance of the participating choirs , modus novus received second prize in May 1997, and the ensemble also received the special prize for the most demanding program. At the worldwide choir competition in Tolosa , the ensemble won third prize in 2000, making it the best participating European choir.
