Demographics

According to the 2001 census, the 109,440 inhabitants lived in 27,889 households on 3,347 km², which corresponds to a statistical household size of 3.92 people.

According to the 2011 census, there were 108,321 residents here. 98.3% of these were black, 1.1% white, 0.3% other, 0.1% colored and 0.1% Indian / Asian. By 2020, 52.7% of all residents are under 20 years old.

Public supply

76% of residents have access to drinking water less than 200 m from their homes. This is obtained from local groundwater , but the municipal administration does not consider this source to be reliable. Only 20% have sufficient access to sanitary facilities such as latrines. Around 75% operate electrical devices, 70% are connected to the power grid. There is a hospital, six smaller inpatient clinics and two mobile clinics. The expansion of public supply, in particular the investment in water supply and sewerage as well as road construction and health, is one of the priorities of the municipal administration.

economy

According to the municipal administration, the economic basis in the municipality lies particularly in the agricultural sector (potatoes, tomatoes, game keeping) and in forestry. The exploitation of mineral raw materials, which are found in various smaller deposits in the municipality, takes place only to a small extent.
