Mompha raschkiella is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe fringed moth family (Momphidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 7 to 11 millimeters. The head is blackish brown and has a creamy white forehead ( frons ). The feelers are dark gray. The thorax is black-brown. The forewings are orange-brown, black-brown at the base and have brown costal strokes. The drawing also includes four lead-gray spots, two of which are below the Costa loader and two on the inner edge of the wing. The latter are bordered on the outside by a clump of protruding black scales . A white costal spot is at 3/4 of the forewing length. There is a black-brown spot on the apex , which is followed by a shiny lead-gray line. The hind wings are dark brownish gray.

In the males, the cucullus is widest at the base. It is slightly curved and has a rounded apex. The saccule is slightly shorter than the cucullus, it tapers distally and has a curved tip. There is a large sclerotized bulge on the ventral margin . The uncus is slim and pointed. The anellus lobes are wide at the base. They are tapered and have a pointed apex. The gnathos is missing. The aedeagus is short and provided with three differently shaped cornuti.

The males differ from the similar species Mompha sexstrigella in the presence of the large bulge on the ventral edge of the saccule and the absence of the sclerotized fork-shaped dorsal edge of the saccule. The females differ from Mompha sexstrigella by the almost square and strongly bristled sterigma and the bulbous ductus bursae at the rear end. Mompha raschkiella also differs from Mompha sexstrigella by the large orange spots on the front wings and the darker hind wings.

distribution

Mompha raschkiella is widespread in Europe with the exception of the extreme south and the far north. In the east the distribution area extends to the Caucasus , the mountains of Central Asia , south Siberia and Sakhalin . The species is absent in Spain and Portugal as well as in some countries of the Balkan Peninsula with the exception of Greece .

Mompha raschkiella feeding tunnel

biology

The caterpillars develop on narrow-leaved willowherb ( Chamaenerion angustifolium ) and presumably also on shaggy willowherb ( Epilobium hirsutum ). The species normally forms two generations a year, in the north it is only one generation. The caterpillars mine in the leaves and live from late May to late June and from late August to September (or from June to October). The first mines are narrow feeding tunnels that often follow the leaf center rib and are almost completely filled with caterpillar droppings. The mine is mostly surrounded by reddish colored leaf tissue. Later, it gradually, sometimes suddenly, widened into a mine. The caterpillars pupate in a grayish-white cocoon that is attached to detritus . The pupa hibernates. The moths fly from the beginning of May to the end of October (or from May to August).
