history

It was British King Charles I who installed Moniaive as the Burgh of Barony in 1636 . The associated market law reflects a market cross from 1638. In the past centuries, two cattle markets were held annually in Moniaive, a lamb market in August and a general cattle market in September. There was also a fair every year in June. In the 1880s, the village had two public schools and churches. The Glencairn Parish Church used today is three kilometers east of Moniaive. The primary school is located on the southern edge of the village.

In the 19th century Moniaive became a popular vacation spot, especially for artists. The late impressionist painter James Paterson settled in Moniaive in the 1880s and had the Villa Kilneiss House built a short time later . The manor Craigdarroch House , located around 3.5 km to the west , which Alexander Ferguson of Craigdarroch had built on the basis of an older building in 1729, is older. It is also worth mentioning the Villa Glenluiart House , located around one kilometer west of the village , which is protected as a Category A monument.

After 817 people were counted in Moniaive in the course of the census survey in 1861, the number fell in the following decades. Since 1971, when 342 people were counted, the population has increased again. In 2011, 487 inhabitants were counted.

traffic

The A702 ( Edinburgh - St John's Town of Dalry ) is Moniaive's main thoroughfare. In 1805 the village received a station on the Cairn Valley Railway . However, the line was closed and the tracks dismantled over the course of the century.
