Monica Dacon

Dame Monica Jessie Dacon , DBE , CMG (birth name: Monica Jessie Sheen ; born June 4, 1934 ) is a former teacher from St. Vincent and the Grenadines , who has been Deputy Governor General since 2001 and from June 3 to September 2, 2002 Acting Governor General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines . In 2010 she became the first woman in her country to become Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire .

Life

Monica Jessie Sheen attended The Girls' High School , where she earned the Cambridge School Certificate and the Cambridge Higher School Certificate . She then began her professional career in 1952 as a teacher at The Girls 'High School and the Boys' Grammar School . After teaching at two schools in Trinidad and Tobago until 1963 , she returned to The Girls' High School as a teacher and then became a teacher at Bishop's College in Kingstown in 1966 . There she worked as a school principal for a few months before she was again a teacher at The Girls' High School from 1966 to 1980 . In addition, she continued her pedagogical training and earned the final certificate from St. Vincent Teachers' College in 1980 and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in education from the University of the West Indies (UWI) in 1982 . Upon her return, she took up a post as a lecturer at St. Vincent Teachers' College in 1982 . She was also involved in the Girl Guides Association and in the Methodist Church's School .

Monica Dacon was married to St. Clair Dacon, who was a member of the Legislative Assembly ( House of Assembly ) . In 2001 she became a member of the Appeals Committee for the Civil Service and has since been Deputy Governor General. After the death of Charles Antrobus on June 3, 2002, she became acting governor general of St. Vincent and the Grenadines . This office she held until September 2, 2002 and was then replaced by Frederick Ballantyne . On January 1, 2005, she became a Companion of the CMG because of her services as a teacher and in public administration . On June 12, 2010, due to her services as a teacher, in public administration and as Deputy Governor General, she became the first woman in her country to become Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).
