Frederick Ballantyne

Sir Frederick Nathaniel Ballantyne , GCMG (born July 5, 1936 in Layou , St. Vincent ; † January 23, 2020 ) was Governor General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines from 2002 to 2019 .

Life

After attending high school, Ballantyne first studied chemistry at Howard University in Washington, DC and then studied medicine at the State University of New York (SUNY), where he was involved in the student council. After graduating as a Doctor of Medicine (MD), he worked as a doctor at the Montreal General Hospital . After training as a doctor of internal medicine in Rochester and cardiology , he returned to St. Vincent and the Grenadines and worked there as medical director at Kingstown General Hospital , later named Milton Cato Memorial Hospital after former Prime Minister Robert Milton Cato .

He was then head of the country's medical service (Chief Medical Officer) between 1985 and 1992, followed by a doctor and medical advisor. He was also involved in numerous organizations such as the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Heart Association and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Diabetes Association . In addition, he advocated the exchange of specialists from other countries in order to ensure medical care in the fields of urology , neurology , ophthalmology and pediatrics . He also advocated the expansion of equipment at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital and the district clinics, and was instrumental in vaccination programs for all school children. He has also worked as an entrepreneur in a variety of fields such as real estate, pharmaceuticals and healthcare. He was a co-founder of the financial services company International Business Services Limited , which was later taken over by his son Marcus Ballantyne, and a co-owner of the Young Island Resort Hotel .

Ballantyne took over the office of Governor General of St. Vincent and the Grenadines on September 2, 2002. He succeeded Monica Dacon , who had taken over the office for a transitional period after the death of Charles Antrobus . On 30 October 2002 he was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG) in the knighthood raised why he has since bears the name suffix "Sir". In 2009 the University of the West Indies (UWI) awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Sciences on the Cave Hill Campus. He resigned as governor on July 31, 2019 for health reasons, and was succeeded by Susan Dougan .
