biography

Monica Hughes lived in many different countries including Egypt , Scotland , England and Zimbabwe . She was the daughter of Phylis Fry and El Ince. Her parents both worked at the University of Liverpool , where her father was a mathematician and her mother a biologist.

During her school years, her teachers always encouraged her to write and participate in essay competitions. Hughes attended Edinburgh University from 1942 to 1943. While in school, Hughes' academic studies were interrupted as a result of World War II. She joined the Women's Royal Naval Service from 1943-1946 to crack German encryption codes. Upon returning from the war, Hughes went back to university to study meteorology . She married Glen Hughes on April 22, 1957 and they had 4 children together.

Before becoming a writer, Hughes had many other careers. From 1948 to 1949 she designed dresses in London and Bulawayo , Zimbabwe . She was also a bank clerk in 1951 and a laboratory technician from 1952 to 1957. Monica Hughes has written over 35 books for teenagers and is widely recognized as one of Canada's finest writers for children and young adults. Many of her books are science fiction. Monica Hughes has been repeatedly named "Canada's Best Children's Science Fiction Writer" by Sarah Ellis, critic in The Horn Book Magazine .

When Hughes is not writing or working at school, she should enjoy swimming, walking, and gardening.

Author

Hughes wrote about 40 books, including more than 20 science fiction novels. Although she has spent much of her life writing, she was almost fifty when her first book was published. This was Gold-Fever Trail: A Klondike Adventure , a historical novel set in Canada at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush .

The Isis trilogy consists of The Keeper of the Isis Light and two sequels, originally published by Hamish Hamilton of London from 1980 to 1982. Hughes accepted the Phoenix Award for The Keeper of the Isis Light 20 years later and discussed her writing process in general and specifically for that work.

WorldCat reports that Invitation to the Game (Toronto: HarperCollins, 1990) is by far their most frequently represented work in participating libraries. It is a dystopia that takes place on Earth in 2154.

Her last book was The Maze (2002). It shows a female protagonist and two bullies who have been magically transported into a labyrinth. The two who bullied her before, however, have to rely on their abilities to escape.

Awards

The Keeper of the Isis Light won the 2000 Phoenix Award from the Children's Literature Association for the best English language children's book that did not receive a major award when it was originally published twenty years ago. The price is named after the phoenix from mythology to indicate the resurgence of a book from the darkness.

Invitation to the Game (Toronto: HarperCollins, 1990) won the Hal Clement Award for Best Science Fiction Novel of the Year for Young Adults

Hughes also won the Vicky Metcalf Award , the Alberta Culture Juvenile Novel Award, the Bay's Beaver Award, and the Alberta R. Ross Annett Award.
