Monika Rüegger (born March 25, 1968 in Engelberg ) is a Swiss politician ( SVP ) from the canton of Obwalden . She was elected to the National Council in the federal elections on October 20, 2019 . This makes her the first woman to represent Obwalden on a federal council.

Life

Monika Rüegger grew up on her parents' farm in Engelberg . She is married and has four sons. As a trained metal construction planner, she managed projects in the cantons of Nidwalden , Bern , Lucerne , and Zurich and took care of the family. Her hobbies are hiking, climbing, skiing and spending time with family.

politics

Monika Rüegger has been President of SVP Canton Obwalden since 2016 and has sat on various commissions . She is a canton councilor and school councilor. Rüegger is considered liberal and critical of the EU. She advocates a lean state and against regulation . Monika Rüegger announced her candidacy on June 14, 2019, the day of the national women's strike, although she does not see herself as a women's rights activist . She turned against a cantonal equal opportunities office in Obwalden, which she felt was unnecessary.
