Monomoy Point Light is a historic and no longer operating lighthouse in the United States . It is located on the southern end of Monomoy Island south of Chatham , Massachusetts and Cape Cod .

history

Chatham's first lighthouse was built in 1823 to allow navigation through the offshore Polluck Reef. It was a wooden tower and a brick lamp room on the roof of the keeper's house.

The current tower, built in 1849, was one of the first cast iron lighthouses in the United States. In 1882 it was painted red so that it was more visible during the day. The entire complex consists of the wooden keeper's house, the cast iron tower and a brick generator house.

Since the Cape Cod Canal opened in 1914, most ships between the south of the Cape and Boston have used this shorter and safer route. Accordingly, the traffic at Monomoy Point Light decreased and the lighthouse was taken out of service in 1923.

The caretaker's house was preserved and served as a guest house. The Lighthouse Preservation Society , the Massachusetts Audubon Society and the Friends of Monomoy are all committed to the preservation of the lighthouse and keeper's house in the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge area. In addition to a historic hunting camp, the Monomoy Point Light complex is the only structure in the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge.

On November 1, 1979, as part of the Multiple Property Submission Lighthouses of Massachusetts MPS , the tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Monomoy Point Lighthouse , file number 79000324.
