history
The recent lighthouse in New England was on the eastern part of the eponymous, after former US President Grover Cleveland appointed Cleveland riffs ( english cleveland ledge ) built to the west of Bourne in Buzzards Bay about 8 mi (12.9 km) southwest the entrance to the Cape Cod Canal is. The 198,851 US dollar (now about 3,617,000 US dollars) comprehensive construction contract was at the 1940 Boston awarded contractors JF Fitzgerald. On October 7, 1940, the New London, Connecticut , 52 ft (15.8 m) high caisson was towed to its intended location, sunk 21 ft (6.4 m) into the water and filled with stones and concrete.
A two-story house for the lighthouse keeper was built on top of the caisson, and the 50 ft (15.2 m) high tower was placed on top of the caisson. The construction work was delayed by the beginning of the Second World War due to a shortage of materials, which is why the lighthouse could only be put into operation on June 1, 1943. He was supplied with weekly supplies by a boat from the Coast Guard stationed in Woods Hole . The fourth-order Fresnel lens, which was originally operated with kerosene , was replaced in 1978 by more modern optics in the course of automation.
In April 2007, the lighthouse was offered for sale under the terms of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act . Since there was no prospective buyer, the building was auctioned off to the public and finally given to an anonymous bidder in 2010 for an auction price of 190,000 dollars (today approx. 222,000 dollars).
The lighthouse was listed on June 15, 1987 under number 87001462 on the National Register of Historic Places .
