Cuttyhunk lighthouse

The Cuttyhunk Lighthouse (English: Cuttyhunk Light) was a lighthouse on the western coast of the island of Cuttyhunk in Massachusetts , United States.

The first beacon on the island, the coast of which is dangerous to shipping between Buzzards Bay in the north and Vineyard Sound in the south, was erected in 1823 and had a height of fire of 16 meters above sea level. In 1857 it received a Fresnel lens .

A new lighthouse was built in the same place in 1891 and had a 15 meter high tower. The building and the house of the lighthouse keeper were damaged by the severe Atlantic hurricane in 1944 and demolished by the American coast guard in 1947. As a replacement, the supervisory authority built a skeleton tower made of steel framework as a carrier for the new light. The tower was removed in 2005.
