The East Chop Light (also Telegraph Hill Light ) is a historic lighthouse in the urban area of Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard Island in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . The current structure was erected towards the end of the 19th century and entered the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1987 as part of the Multiple Property Submission Lighthouses of Massachusetts MPS .

history

The lighthouse is located on the highest point on the island, known as Telegraph Hill , which gave the structure its colloquial name. It was drawn on maps as early as 1646 and identified as the East Chop Light from the start; the English settlers used the term chop to designate the entrance to a shipping canal . The counterpart is the West Chop Light in Tisbury . In 1869, Captain Silas Daggett built a privately operated facility on the site of today's lighthouse to guide ships coming from the east into Vineyard Haven Harbor . This was lost in a fire in 1871 and was initially replaced by a tower that was placed on the roof of a residential building.

The information on the year of construction of today's structure ranges from 1876 to 1878; For example, the Massachusetts Historical Commission in its nomination for the NRHP specifies the year of construction 1876, while the National Park Service states that the United States Lighthouse Board acquired the property in 1878 and had the lighthouse that still exists there built in the same year. In the 1880s the lighthouse was painted reddish brown and earned it the nickname chocolate lighthouse . It was not painted white again until 1988.

The lighthouse was automated in 1933 and entered on the National Register of Historic Places on June 15, 1987 under number 87001480 . It is now owned by the United States Coast Guard and operated by the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society . It has been open to the public since 1994.

architecture

The 40 ft (12.2 m) high tower was built in the Italianate style and, due to its exposed location on Telegraph Hill, reaches a fire height of 79 ft (24.1 m). It stands on a concrete foundation and is itself made of cast iron . The cylindrical, conical lighthouse is painted white and has a black painted fire house.

technology

The lighthouse sends every 6 seconds in common mode ( english iso ) a green light, which up to 9  sm (16,7  km ) should be interpreted broadly. A 300 mm lens has been used as the light source since 1984, replacing the original 4th order Fresnel lens .
