The Montanara Choir is an internationally known, German male choir that is mainly dedicated to lighter music. His home is the greater Stuttgart area in Baden-Württemberg .

Career

In 1958, some of the singers met South German Radio and the Staatsoper Stuttgart with the aim of folk songs and lighter popular music to sing. After auditioning with Franz Biehler , he immediately made a record with the young choir. First, the song La Montanara by Toni Ortelli and the German folk song Jenseits des Tales were recorded. Both recordings became hits, and since the choir loved to sing the song La Montanara , the name for the new choir was immediately found. In the 1960s, the conductors HJ Dahmen , Walter Höfling and Heinz Buchhold took over the direction of the choir. The choir soon became a figurehead for choral folk music and folk music of high performance, as it was full-time trained singers. But the choir sang not only German folk music, but also international folklore and evergreens . Sometimes he accompanied soloists such as the trumpeter Walter Scholz .

In 1972 Harry Pleva (born July 29, 1929 in Stuttgart, † January 5, 2017) took over the direction of the choir for almost 30 years, which released numerous records on which the most famous German folk songs, but also newer folk songs were recorded. In addition to numerous television productions, Harry Pleva has led his singers to concert halls at home and abroad.

In 1991 the Montanara Choir took part in the Grand Prix of Folk Music . Her song The Lakes in the Land of Mountains reached 9th place in the German preliminary decision.

In 2001 Michael Alber (* 1963 in Tuttlingen ) took over the direction of the choir, as Harry Pleva gave up this position for reasons of age. Michael Alber has a solid education and has led other professional choirs, including the Stuttgart State Opera Choir. The Montanara Choir is one of the best quality male choirs in Europe.
