Hermann Josef Dahmen (born February 19, 1910 in Bonn ; † November 14, 1991 in Esslingen am Neckar ) was a German choir director , composer , conductor and music historian .

Life

In the Rhenish family, in which Dahmen grew up, people used to sing folk songs . He studied musicology in combination with folklore in Bonn . With a few fellow students , he founded a chamber choir , which the Cologne radio station became aware of and offered him a collaboration that lasted until 1951. From 1935 to 1937 he also directed the Bonn Abbey Choir. From 1951 to 1975 he was chief conductor of the "Chores des Süddeutsche Rundfunks", which was called "Südfunk-Chor" from 1959 and "Südfunk-Chor Stuttgart" from 1971 (renamed " SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart " again in 1998 ).

Dahmen was a great Friedrich Silcher researcher who wrote several books and essays - biographies, editions of works, catalogs of works - on and about the folk song composer. He also founded the Silcher Archive in 1956 in Schnait, the town where he was born ( Weinstadt ).

As the first director of the Montanara Choir (original spelling: MontanaraChor) in Stuttgart, he pushed their successful stage and record career. For the Südfunk and Montanara choirs as well as for other choirs in the area, he arranged international folk tunes or composed sociable songs. In particular , from 1964 to 1986 he led the men's choir in Aichschieß , which Gotthilf Fischer had headed, with a demanding repertoire, which could include a Stravinsky piece , for example .

He last lived in Aichschieß, which is part of the Aichwald community , and died in Esslingen am Neckar, ten kilometers away.
