The Montanus Realschule (MRS) is a municipal secondary school in Leverkusen-Steinbüchel , North Rhine-Westphalia . Since the school campaigns against racism, it has been a " school without racism - school with courage " since 2013 and a MINT real school in the natural sciences since 2006 and takes part in the GLOBE program . In 2005 and 2007 it was a GLOBE Germany school.

history

On April 9, 1959, the Montanus Realschule was founded under the name Realschule Schlebusch. In 1975 the school moved to the Schlebusch school center and was renamed the Montanus Realschule in 1984 after Vinzenz von Zuccalmaglio . In 1992 the school exchanged its school building with the Schlebusch comprehensive school. Due to a lack of space, an extension was built in 2000. In addition, the main building had to be renovated. In 2008 the renovation work was finished. There has been a school association at this school since 1978.

The school consists of an eight-shaped main building, an extension and a new / extension building. The school has a cafeteria, a sports hall, a sports field and a school library. There is a school garden in one of the two inner courtyards. There are two physics, computer science, chemistry and biology rooms. The Steinbüchel city library is located in the extension of the Montanus secondary school.

particularities

The Montanus Realschule is the only MINT Realschule in Leverkusen and has a science and a foreign language branch. In addition to English, French is also taught. In French, the DELF certificate can be obtained from grade 8. Since the school year 1980/81 there has been an officially recognized school partnership with the Collège St. Gildas in Auray in Brittany . From the seventh grade onwards, students have three opportunities to take part in a student exchange. In the English branch, the school takes part in The Big Challenge competition , in the mathematics subject it takes part in the Kangaroo Mathematics competition and in German every year in a reading competition. In the natural sciences, the school regularly takes part in the Jugend forscht competition. The impressions of the study trip to the memorial in Auschwitz, which was largely financed by the Erinnern Enabling Foundation, were able to flow into the pupils as part of the “Who was here, don't forget!”

Furthermore, the school has had the seal " School without Racism - School with Courage " since 2013 . The godmother of this project is the author and historian Maren Gottschalk .

The Montanus Realschule is a cooperating school of "steps to success".

In the fifth and sixth grades, the school offers a music class and a science class. In addition, the school was awarded the career choice seal for the second time in 2013 , as classes eight to ten are prepared for career choice. The Montanus Realschule deals with the topic of career choice and therefore offers the students an internship in the ninth grade . The school has a yearbook, a medical service, dispute resolution, a weather team and a cafeteria. There is also a student aid.

At the Montanus Realschule, lunch, which can be pre-ordered from home, is paid for by chip card / student ID . In cooperation with the AWO Leverkusen, afternoon care takes place for the fifth and sixth grade students four days a week after the end of lessons until 4 p.m. There are collaborations with Chempark / Currenta , Barmer GEK Leverkusen, Caritas , the Leverkusen Music School and NaturGut Ophoven .

The Steinbüchel branch of the Leverkusen City Library with over 8,000 titles is located in an adjoining building of the Montanus Realschule.

Current projects

Practice-oriented and realistic chemistry training

Thanks to funding from the Bayer Education Foundation 2013 , the pupils at the Montanus Realschule learn how to use physical-chemical analysis methods and gain deeper insights into chemical working methods. The Foundation for the Montanus Realschule and the Realschule Am Stadtpark handed over a total of 37,000 euros in funding.

Young meets old

The Montanus Realschule has started a generation project with the local Caritas association under the motto "Young meets old".

EnergieLux

In addition to other Leverkusen schools, the Montanus Realschule also participates in the "EnergieLux" project - climate protection in Leverkusen schools and kindergartens . 26 municipal schools and 15 kindergartens have already joined the project.

School club

The school association of the Montanus Realschule Leverkusen was founded on January 12, 1978 and celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2013. The association sees its tasks primarily in the granting of subsidies for the procurement of funds for scientific and artistic lessons, promotion of school sports, school hikes and study trips, promotion of school events, support of students at school events and the work of the student council. The school association has supported many of the school's projects so far, including a. various purchases, school trips, embellishments, readings and cultural events.

Awards

The Montanus Realschule Leverkusen received the Kirchhoff Award on March 3, 2009 in Düsseldorf from the Employers' Association of the Metal and Electrical Industry Rhein-Wupper eV / Entrepreneurship Rhein-Wupper eV for its series of lessons "Clean air for good lungs and a healthy life for people and the environment" receive. The North Rhine-Westphalian employers awarded the “innovative and practice-oriented teaching” at the Leverkusen school with first prize and prize money of 2,000 euros.

Bunker system

As became known in 2012, there is a 3000 square meter, 40 room bunker designed for 90 people under the Montanus Realschule . This bunker was built during the Cold War for the city ​​administration and the chief city ​​director , so that they could have run the city in the event of war. Since the secret bunker is no longer needed, it was rededicated years ago and now serves as a storage room for the Montanus secondary school and the youth fire brigade.
