Settlement history
The Montbautier was settled by Mennonites who were expelled from the Emmental. They had received permission from the Prince-Bishop of Basel to settle at heights of over 1000 meters in the Jura if they were prepared to avoid contact with the local French-speaking population. Until the 1980s, there was still a German-speaking Mennonite school on the Montbautier.
