geography

Map of Monte Consolino

In the north and east the Consolino is bounded by the Fiumara Stilaro , to the north the mountain ends in several terraces, one of which is the municipality of Pazzano . from there the Monte Mammicomito rises again . The village of Bivongi is located at the foot of the mountain, directly on the Stilaro . The mountain slopes more gently to the southwest. The municipality of Stilo is located there.

On the summit of the Consolino you can still find the remains of the Norman Castello di Stilo , which Ruggero II had built. A little lower on a small flat area are the remains of the older Stilo castle, which withstood the Arab invasion for 6 years. It is a Byzantine castrum also from the 9th century. Both ruins can be reached from Stilo on two hiking trails. In 2009 the ruins were restored.

Lauree monastiche - hermitages

On the mountain there are 16 lauree grottoes from Byzantine times inhabited by monks. The most important of these is the Grotta di Sant'Angelo . It houses a fresco which, according to Paolo Orsi, depicts the Savior with Saints Cosmas and Damian or Peter and Paul wrapped in the blessing of Christ .

The Lawra of the Blessed Ambrogio e Nicola of Saint Giovanni Theristis was recently rededicated and the Laura della Divina Pastorella (santa Maria di Tramontana, L. the Divine Shepherdess / Mary of the Mountains), which was mentioned as early as 1115, is a rock church for some time ( chiesa Rupestre). A lavra in the town center, which was hollowed out of the sandstone, houses a cross with the inscription in Greek O Aghios Georgeios . The big Laura on the slope above Stilo is a grotto system with various retaining walls.

Sports

From Stilo there are two short excursions to the Norman castle on the top of the mountain. One of them is steeper, but well signposted. It follows the old Via Crucis . The second climbs more gently at first, before it leads cross-country at the end. Since 2006, various climbing routes have been developed in cooperation with Calabria Rock in 2006 . Since then, the mountain has been divided into 6 sectors: Grotta, Pilastrino, Gaia, Torre Staccata, Calabria Esaudita and Città del Sole . The routes have degrees of difficulty between 4a and 7b.
