Location of the spoil heaps described in the text

As Monte Kali , Kaliberg or Kalimandscharo are colloquially several spoil heaps in Germany , which consist of spoil from potash salt production . They pose an ecological problem because salts and heavy metals are washed out by precipitation and pollute the soil , groundwater and surface water in the area.

The highest potash mountain is Monte Kali near Heringen (Werra) in Hesse; it towers over the surroundings by more than 200 meters (summit about 530  m above sea  level ).
