Montfort ( Limburgisch Mofert ) is a town in the Dutch province of Limburg , about 8 km south of Roermond . It belongs to the municipality of Roerdalen . 3,085 people live in Montfort. Montfort is not to be confused with Montfoort , which is in the province of Utrecht .
history
Montfort Castle, built in the 13th century, was an official seat of the county of Geldern . Around 1270 Montfort received city rights . The church was built in 1344 but was slightly damaged in World War II . The center of the town, however, was badly destroyed. 186 people were killed in the bombing raid on January 20, 1945.
Montfort formed an independent municipality until 1991 when it merged into the new municipality of Ambt Montfort . This was incorporated into Roerdalen in 2007 .
Events
Every year at the beginning of May, a well-frequented classic car meeting takes place in Montfort at the castle, at which old cars, motorcycles, trucks and military vehicles can be inspected in addition to historic tractors and agricultural machinery.
