The Monument de la Pierre d'Haudroy

The Monument de la Pierre d'Haudroy (German: Stone Monument of Haudroy) is a monument in France that marks the point of the transition of the German Armistice Commission over the war front at the end of the First World War and commemorates the events associated with it.

Location

The monument is located in the commune of La Flamengrie , in the Aisne department , on the D 285 (Rue d'Haudroy) that connects Wignehies with La Capelle , and halfway between La Capelle and Haudroy, a district of La Flamengrie.

history

The memorial marks one of the most important events of the First World War . On November 7, 1918 at 8 p.m. and 20 minutes, the four cars of the German Armistice Commission under the direction of Matthias Erzberger arrived here . Captain Lhuillier, commander of the 1st Battalion of the 171st Infantry Regiment, received the German plenipotentiaries. He had previously asked Corporal Pierre Sellier to signal the initially local armistice with the trumpet, followed by a "Garde à vous" (something like: "Have eight!"), Which marked the beginning of the negotiations and on November 11, 1918 that brought a complete end to hostilities. The armistice commission was first brought to La Capelle in the Villa Pasque, from where they were first taken by car and from Tergnier by train to Compiègne to the clearing of Rethondes . There the armistice was signed early in the morning on November 11, 1918 in the Compiègne car .

From that date until his death in 1948, the trumpeter Pierre Sellier used his instrument to commemorate the armistice every year.

Destroyed by the Germans on August 14, 1940, it was rebuilt under the auspices of a committee that had been headed since 1946 by Colonel G. Hestre and chaired by State Secretary P. Schneiter. Designed by architect Louis Rey, the new monument was inaugurated on November 14, 1948.

It has been a listed building as a historical monument since 1997 .

French President Emmanuel Macron visited the monument on November 7, 2018 as part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the end of the war.

The monument erected on this site was originally made of granite from the Vosges and was inaugurated on November 5, 1925. The inscription reads:

1918 - 7 November - 20 heures 20 - Ici triompha la ténacité du poilu. (German: 1918 - November 7th - 8:20 pm - Here the tenacity of the Poilu triumphed ).

It is also noted:

Ce monument a été érigé par souscription publique à l'initiative de l'UNC et du comité d'AC 1914-18 de la Pierre d'Haudroy présidé par A. Daublain, inaugurated on November 8, 1925. En cet endroit, le clairon Sellier sonna le cessez-le-feu. (Eng .: This monument was erected by public subscription on the initiative of the Union nationale des combattants (National War Veterans Association) and the Committee AC 1914–18 of the Pierre d'Haudroy, chaired by A. Daublain, and inaugurated on November 8, 1925. An At this point the trumpeter Sellier heralded the armistice.)

The central stone that was used for the reconstruction of the monument after 1945 comes from a construction site in Ravensbrück in Germany.
