The Monument to Party Founding ( kor.  당 창건 기념탑 ) is a monument in North Korea's capital Pyongyang to commemorate the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea in 1945. The monument at the Munsu Street in the district taedonggang-guyok forms the party emblem designed by the former dictator Kim Il-sung . It was built from October 1995 and unveiled in 1996. Allegedly it was designed by Kim Jong-il .

construction

The concrete monument consists of a ring-shaped base from which protruding three hands holding three tools that represent the three central elements of the Party of Labor of Korea. Each column is 50 meters high, which is supposed to symbolize the party's 50th birthday. The hammer stands for the working class, the sickle for the peasants and the brush for the intellectuals. The three symbols are surrounded by a stone ring, which represents the unity of the North Korean people who are united around the party. 216 adjoining stone blocks and an inner diameter of 42 meters commemorate Kim Jong-il's birthday on February 16, 1942. The ring has an outer diameter of 50 meters, also based on the 50th anniversary of the party. In Korean characters it is embossed on its front: "Long live the Labor Party of Korea, which leads the Korean people to all victories!"

The granite foundation of the monument has a diameter of 70 meters, referring to the founding of the Communist Union for the smashing of imperialism by Kim Il-sung , 70 years before the monument was built, on October 17, 1926. The monument is illuminated at night.

Reliefs

In the inner area of ​​the ring framing the monument there are three bronze figure group reliefs to represent the party history.

The first relief deals specifically with the historical development of the party. Among other things, it refers to the establishment of the Communist Union to Smash Imperialism, which is considered the cornerstone of the Labor Party of Korea. It shows the Paektusan in the background.

On the second relief, various people, including a worker, a farmer, an academic, a soldier and a student, stand together in front of the party flag, to represent the strength and unified popular support of the party.

The third relief shows the progress of the North Korean people under the torch of the Chuch'e ideology and makes reference to the party's role in building socialism and the desired Korean reunification . The globe can be seen in the background as a call to struggle for state independence in the world.

Environment design

The monument is located in the center of a 250,000 square meter complex, which is partially designed as a park with a fountain and planted with single hawthorns and junipers . It was juxtaposed with the great Mansudae monument . This is at the same height on the other side of the Taedong-gang . Behind the monument, the location of two red-colored and step-shaped apartment blocks was chosen so that, when looking at the monument to the founding of the party, they should remind of two symmetrically waving flags in the background. In front of the monument there is a so-called educational space, which is used, among other things, for memorial marches.

The monument is depicted on the back of the 50 won note from 2002.
