action

In 1999 an old vampire and his young companion are on the run. The older one has had enough of his existence and advises the younger to find a new companion for himself. He wishes to see the sea in the sun again.

2014: The story now takes place in the fictional Chinese city of Mallepa, where Chinese, Cantonese , Taiwanese and Japanese live side by side. The city is controlled by triads and is sinking into crime.

The Japanese street children Shô, his older brother Shinji and her friend Toshi steal a suitcase of money from a triad boss and flee with it. Shô finds a weakened stranger (played by Hyde) whose hand is eaten away by the incident sunlight and brings him to safety. When the children inspect the stolen property, the owner turns up. When he wants to kill the boys, the stranger attacks him and sucks the blood out of his throat. While Toshi flees in shock, Shô regards the vampire as his lifesaver.

In 2025, the adult Shô (played by Gackt ) is still under the wing of the bloodsucker Kei. Together with Toshi, who runs a pizzeria in Mallepa, the two have grown into a gang of small crooks . Their tactic is to deliver sleeping pills to triad bases and rob them as soon as the drugs work. In one of these attacks, Shô and his mentor meet Son ( Leehom Wang ) from Taiwan , who wants to take revenge for an attack on his younger sister, and ally with him. After Son got his revenge thanks to Shô, Shô and Kei get to know his silent sister Yi Che. Kei falls in love with the girl, who seems to be more interested in Shô, who in turn is not averse to her either. The five, Shô, Kei, Toshi, Son and Yi Che grow together into a kind of family and have a happy time together without Son and Yi Che knowing that Kei is a vampire.

Yi Che, who compensates for her lack of ability to speak with her artistic talent, gives an inauguration ceremony to complete her greatest work. Kei, realizing that his life with Shô, unlike his own, will not last forever, went on a hunger strike out of defiance and is getting weaker and weaker. The celebration is disrupted by two crooks from the Chinese mafia, who have long had Shô in their sights. Toshi is shot dead in the following shooting. Son does nothing and Kei cannot help Toshi in time due to his starved condition, but brings the murderers down. Because of his awakened bloodlust, he does not react to Shô's calls and the horrified faces of the others when they realize his true nature.

Nine years later, Shô rose to become the influential yakuza who controls the western district of Mallepas and is therefore still at odds with the Chinese mafia. Shô's former buddy Son joined them as a Chinese, so the relationship between the two is now correspondingly tense. Kei, who has disappeared since that incident, has surrendered himself to the police and is now awaiting execution, charged with murder. Shô, meanwhile married to Yi Che and father of their daughter Hana, only found out about it through a television report and visits his old friend in prison.

Four of Shô's gang members are shot dead by triads in the street, and Shinji as well. Shinji is murdered in Son's presence, but this time too he does not intervene. When he and Shô meet at Shinji's corpse, Yi Che can barely prevent her husband from shooting her brother by overcoming her childhood trauma and speaking for the first time.

A few months later: Yi Che is terminally ill with a brain tumor . Shô and Son meet again at their sickbed. This time, Son apologizes to Shô, who then replies that they would shoot at each other the next time they meet. In desperation, he calls Kei's prison and asks for help. This awakens the spark of life in Kei and he flees back to Mallepa. At Yi Che's bedside, Shô learns that she actually loved Kei all along. Even so, he asks Kei to turn her into a vampire in order to save her. Kei refuses. Shô, decides to kill Mr. Chan, Son's client and person responsible for the murders of Shô's gang members and his brother. Kei accompanies him and has to promise to save Yi Che if he dies.

There is a showdown with Chan and his triads. When Shô had fought his way to Son, who was waiting for him, to prevent Kei from intervening, he shoots the roof of the factory so far that there is only a tiny, shadowy spot left in which Kei is protected from the sun. Thereupon Son and Shô disappear together in the corridors of the factory in order to be able to fight out their conflict. The Kei, now trapped in a cage of sunlight, manages to break free.

Meanwhile, Shô and Son have agreed on a duel , which Shô, who ultimately did not shoot Son, loses. Then Kei enters the scene, sees his friend lying dying and shoots Son.

2045: The now 18-year-old Hana became a painter. The evening before her departure abroad, she thanks Kei, who has looked after her over the years. When she has disappeared, Shô, whom Kei made a vampire, appears. Now that Hana is an adult, Kei and Shô drive to the beach, where they await the sunrise. The last scene of the film shows Shô's empty car bathed in the light of the morning sun.
