The wayside shrine in front of the church

The so-called murder picture stick is in Dimbach , a district of Volkach . He decorates the square in front of the pilgrimage church Maria de Rosario .

history

The construction of the wayside shrine goes back to a personal tragedy. In 1720 Georg Christoph Sondinger, the mayor of Forchheim , and Johann Valentin Moser made a pilgrimage to Dettelbach with their wives . During this pilgrimage, Moser, who was stationed as a soldier in Bamberg, died from a pistol shot. His wife immediately suspected Sondinger. He had already fled to Neuhaus near Höchstadt an der Aisch .

Only in 1721 did the arrest Sondingers. On March 24, he was tried and found innocent after hearing several witnesses. The court saw it as proven that a self-inflicted accident Moser had been the cause of death. Ms. Mosers, however, continued to try to portray Sondinger in public as a murderer. She even had the wayside shrine erected so that posterity could continue to believe her version of the story.

The torture was originally on the way to Münsterschwarzach and was only recently placed in front of the church. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the wayside shrine under the number D-6-75-174-179 as an architectural monument.

description

The baroque wayside shrine is more than four meters high. A sculpture of the Pietà carried by several angels crowns him. Two coat of arms medallions are between a putti . The medallion base below shows so-called speaking images on four sides and is closed at the bottom by three angel heads. There are two inscriptions in the actual plinth of torture.

The front reads: “September 12th. 1720 In the evening between 6 and 7 o'clock, the lieutenant of Bamberg Johann Valentin Moser, born in Zeil, was shot by his friend Christoph Sondinger, mayor of Forchheim, on their return from the Dettelbach pilgrimage. You wanderer pray for him ”. The reverse bears a reference to a renovation in 1863. The pictures show the course of the alleged deed. On the left the pilgrims pray in front of the miraculous image, in front the mayor points the pistol at Moser. The right side shows the evacuation of the injured person. In the back you can see Moser on his deathbed.
