Moritz August von Rochow (1649)

Moritz August von Rochow (born June 28, 1609 , † August 25, 1653 in Dittmannsdorf ) was a colonel from Kurbrandenburg over a regiment on foot, then imperial sergeant-general and colonel also state elder of the Principality of Jauer and the Principality of Schweidnitz . He was also the heir to Goltzow in the Mark Brandenburg as well as the heir and feudal lord of the Königsberg lordship and lord of Gastershausen and Raben in the principality of Schweidnitz. He was the “agile” in the “ fruitful society ”.

His father Wichmann von Rochow (1603–1632) was master hunter of Brandenburg and captain von Lehnin. His mother was his wife Hedwig von Röbel (* 1581–10 May 1631), she was the daughter of August Moritz von Röbel (* 1548–3 September 1606) and Ursula von Burgsdorff († 1596).

Life

He was already a major in Brandenburg in 1631, later he was appointed in command of the Peitz Fortress . After the Peace of Prague of June 12, 1636, an army of 6000 men on foot and 1000 horsemen was to be raised from the Swedes to recapture Pomerania. One of the regiments belonged to Rochow. He moved with him against General Wrangel, who was standing with Küstrin , and was captured but soon exchanged for the Swedish Colonel Hardenstruck. Next he tried to conquer Frankfurt an der Oder with 2000 men , which failed. In return he was able to relieve Landsberg an der Warthe . In 1638 he became colonel and commander of Spandau, where he made the fortress ready for defense again. He applied to the emperor for permission to marry and the title of baron. On January 17, 1640 he was raised to the baron status by the emperor, he was granted both and the considerable fees were waived. In 1641 he was admitted to the “Fruitful Society” as “the agile”.

He belonged to the party of Count Adam von Schwarzenberg who stood as a supporter of the emperor against the Brandenburg elector. When Elector Friedrich Wilhelm came to power, Rochow and his regiment were supposed to swear allegiance to the Elector. Rochow refused, on the grounds that he and his regiment had sworn to the Kaiser. For this he was deposed in 1641 and initially arrested in Spandau. After a while he was allowed to move around town again and used the opportunity to escape with Count von Schwarzenberg. With the help of his cousin, Rittmeister Adolph Ehrentreich von Rochow, he was able to go to Regensburg with his page from the Marwitz and two valets to the Kaiser . On September 14, 1641, the emperor gave him a patent as colonel. Immediately afterwards he began to recruit a regiment that would last until 1643. The emperor sent him to Glogau as a commander, which he defended with 500 men and 200 Croatians. General Lennart Torstensson demands the surrender, which Rochow refuses. But he was unable to ward off the subsequent storm and was captured again.

The elector tried in the meantime (1644) to prosecute Rochow, but had to stop the process under pressure from the emperor. In November 1647 he received a letter of safe conduct to return to the Mark Brandenburg. For this he had to confess his offenses and accept the punishment, so it came to a reconciliation with the electors and was allowed to remain in the imperial service . From 1646 to 1649 he was once again the owner of an imperial regiment on foot. In 1651 he moved on a recommendation from Emperor Ferdinand III. as a colonel sergeant in the Brandenburg service. He died on August 25, 1653 in Dittmannsdorf in Silesia.
