Baron Moritz Flavius Trenck von Tonder (* 1746 in Dresden , † September 21, 1810 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German officer and publicist .

Life

Moritz Flavius Trenck von Tonder was born in Dresden in 1746, where his father was the Polish envoy. He was educated at the Theresianum in Vienna and then joined the Imperial and Royal Genie Corps as an officer . On behalf of the government, he made a trip to Spain , where he directed the construction of the fortifications in Cartagena . He was a victim of intrigue and slander and was imprisoned for two years.

After his release he resigned from his army service and settled in Neuwied in 1785 . There he published the influential newspaper Political Talks of the Dead , whose articles he wrote mostly alone. In principle, it appeared without specifying the author or the place of publication and was regularly censored. The conservative, anti-revolutionary journal propagated the Austro-Prussian cooperation and was an important champion of the German idea on the Rhine.

On September 15, 1795 Neuwied was occupied by the French, and Trenck von Tonder was then often hostile, so that he moved to Frankfurt am Main in 1796.

family

Moritz Flavius Trenck von Tonder married Maria Katharina d'Auchopt in Neuwied around 1785. Their son Moritz Trenck von Tonder (1786–1855) later became a banker and industrialist.
