Moritz Karl August Axt (born August 7, 1801 in Naderkau , † July 20, 1862 in Kreuznach ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Karl August Axt was the son of the royal district forester August Axt and a grandson of the royal Saxon district court councilor Gottfried Konrad Axt. After being prepared for his education by private tutors, Axt attended the Lyceum in Wittenberg from 1814 , which was under the direction of Franz Spitzner . With this he moved to the grammar school in Erfurt in 1820 , where he passed his Abitur on September 29, 1821. In the same year he began studying philology at the University of Halle . Karl Christian Reisig , August Seidler , Christian Gottfried Schütz , Jacobs and August Hermann Niemeyer became his formative teachers in Halle .

After receiving the Dr. phil. Axt became a senior teacher at the grammar school in Cleve and in 1834 moved to the grammar school in Wetzlar as the first senior teacher . In April 1837 he was awarded the title of professor by royal resolution and in 1840 he became the principal of the school. On April 4, 1842, he moved to Kreuznach as rector of the grammar school , which task he took on with the inaugural speech Commentationum philologarum particula altera . He performed this task until June 15, 1862 because he was no longer able to perform the task assigned to him due to health problems. After spending four weeks in the sickbed, he passed away. On July 24, 1862, his body was buried with great sympathy.
