Moritzburg Church

The Moritzburg Church is the church building of the Evangelical Lutheran parish in Moritzburg in Saxony and is a listed building .

The 47 m high church was built from 1902 to 1904 according to a design by the Dresden architect Richard Schleinitz (1861-1916) for the then Eisenberg -Moritzburg parish. The foundation stone was laid on September 26, 1902 and the church consecration took place on November 7, 1904 . The construction costs of the church amounted to 163,635 marks. What is remarkable about the church is that the choir faces west and is not oriented to the east as usual .

The church is designed in the style of a central building in neo-baroque forms and thus corresponds stylistically to the baroque Moritzburg castle . Special features in the interior are the much older altarpiece “Transfiguration of Christ” by Stefano Cattaneo (painted in 1669 for Elector Johann Georg II of Saxony ), the four evangelist stucco ornaments in the double dome and the organ built in 1904 by the Dresden organ building firm Gebrüder Jehmlich with a late romantic sound . It has 25 stops on two manuals and a pedal .

During the chaos of the Second World War , the church was almost destroyed by fire twice. In April 1945 by the SS "because of their exposed location" and on May 7, 1945 by the advancing Soviet troops "because wreaths with swastika bows in honor of those who had fallen were hung on the galleries". In both cases the worst could be prevented by the pastor Otto Seibt (pastor from 1944 to 1957) and others.

After no building maintenance measures could be carried out for a long time, a comprehensive renovation and restoration of the Moritzburg church finally began in 1992 . For financial reasons, the work was divided into individual steps, which were carried out over a period of almost two decades until completion was celebrated in summer 2010. Funding, grants (from the federal government, the state of Saxony and the municipality) as well as private donations made it possible to raise the sum of over 2.4 million euros for the renovation.

The church is the scene of the Moritzburg Chamber Music Festival , which takes place every August .
