The Moritzkirche is a Protestant church in Naumburg (Saale) in the Burgenland district .

history

The first Moritz church was built in Romanesque style around 1021 as part of the nuns monastery built. The art historian Heinrich Bergner speaks of a founding time between 1002 and 1028. In 1119 the nunnery was dissolved by Bishop Dietrich I and transformed into an Augustinian canon monastery and with it the first documentary mention of the monastery. After a fire in the church and much of the adjoining monastery in 1260, restorations were carried out. Parts of the south tower as the oldest building in Naumburg and the north aisle still bear witness to the remains that were included in the Gothic church.

Despite the high debts of the monastery, the late Gothic new building took place in the same place around 1500 to around 1510. Although buttresses were erected in the process, instead of the planned vaults, only a flat ceiling was used as the upper end of the room. In 1521 the monastery became Protestant. After St. Moritz was spared the city fire in 1532, the first Protestant preacher Johannes Wolkenstein was introduced to the Moritzkirche by the Elector in 1537, assisted by two deacons. In 1544, after the death of the last provost, the monastery was withdrawn by Elector Moritz von Sachsen and sold to the city of Naumburg as part of a man's fief . The city had all the monastery buildings torn down and built the new council suburb around the church. From the Moritz church became a parish church in the deanery is the rectory .

From 1705 to 1721, extensive repair and restoration work was carried out on the church under Duke Moritz Wilhelm , which was accompanied by redesigns in the Baroque style . During this time, among other things, a large altar was installed in the church. The baroque fixtures were removed after 1875, so that the church has a Gothic appearance again today . The north tower was rebuilt from 1863 to 1867.

In the simply designed interior there is now a crucifix made of oak wood with a torso of Jesus Christ from around 1230. The posthumously made incised tombstone of Bishop Richwin comes from 1260 . Since the last renovation in 1992 and 1993, a second altar has been located near the pulpit.
