Guido Ernst Alfred Constantin Mortimer von Kessel (born May 25, 1893 in Arnswalde , † January 8, 1981 in Goslar ) was a German officer , most recently a general of the armored forces in World War II .

Life

Kessel began his military career on August 1, 1914, when he joined the Thuringian Hussar Regiment No. 12 of the Prussian Army as a flagjunker at the beginning of the First World War . On March 22, 1915 he was promoted to lieutenant and served as a regimental adjutant in his main unit from September 1916.

After the war he was accepted into the Reichswehr and served in the 10th (Prussian) cavalry regiment . From October 1, 1926 to January 31, 1928 he was regimental adjutant here and then until September 30, 1933 chief of the 3rd Squadron in Züllichau .

Kessel served as commander of the 20th Panzer Division on the Eastern Front during World War II and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross during this time . In the final phase of the war he led the VII Panzer Corps from December 27, 1944 as commanding general . Kessel was a US prisoner of war from May 2, 1945 to June 5, 1947 .
