Xiom is a German metal band from Zwickau , which was founded in the early 1980s under the name Argus , later called Moshquito , dissolved around 1991, reunited in 1995 and renamed Xiom in 2011. In 2018 it was renamed Moshquito.

history

The band was founded in the early 1980s under the name Argus, and initially only covered various songs. Around 1982 the band started playing at various events in the GDR . The cast consisted of singer Thomas Sachse, guitarists Ingo Lohf and Steffen Häupl, bass player Manfred Uhlig and drummer Achim Waldheim. Around 1985 Achim Waldheim left the band and was replaced by Uwe "Kuvi" Kovarnik. Due to problems with the authorities, some concerts had to be canceled, with the band being monitored by the Stasi , among other things . Since singer Thomas Sachse was called up to the NVA , he was replaced by Benjamin Müller. The band renamed themselves to Moshquito in 1987. The reason given by the band was that they were able to mislead the GDR surveillance organization for at least a short time. More concerts followed, with the band not only covering songs by Metallica , but also increasingly playing songs by Slayer , Anthrax , Destruction and Celtic Frost . Shortly thereafter, Benjamin Müller was replaced by singer Oliver Hippauf , who later also worked for Macbeth . Due to his voice, the band could now cover other songs by bands like Kreator or Running Wild .

In 1987, the band took an English-language, first demo called No Back to Inferno , which included a cover version of the Beatles song Penny Lane in addition to their first songs . The demo was recorded in their own studio Over the Altstoffhandlung and offered for sale at their concerts. After a year and a half, Olli Hippauf was also drafted into the NVA, so Benjamin Müller returned to the band. In 1988 the band recorded a second demo Mosh In Moscow . With the fall of the Berlin Wall in autumn 1989, the band slowly disintegrated. One reason for this was that the band was still primarily a cover band at the time, but people were now able to see the original bands. Uhlig was the first to leave the band and take care of his job. Häupl and Müller also left the band soon after. Guitarist Rochus Roder and bassist André Nebel joined the line-up to replace them. Together they released the demo Only Death Is for Nothing in 1991 . Nebel could also be heard on the electric guitar at the demo. However, the band could not get the attention they wanted, so that the last concert took place in the Chemnitz unit . The band only consisted of three members: guitarist Ingo Lohf, bassist and singer André Nebel, and drummer Uwe Kovarnik.

In 1995 the group got together again, but only Ingo Lohf and André Nebel were left. Together they rehearsed a few songs again, initially using a drum computer . Nebel renounces the singing position in order to be able to concentrate more on the bass playing, so that singer Oliver Hippauf came back to the band. In 1996, the first appearance after the re-establishment followed in Zwickau, but still no suitable drummer was found, so that a drum computer was also used for this. Only later was a suitable drummer found in Sascha Kurpanek. Oliver Hippauf, Ingo Lohf, André Nebel and Sascha Kurpanek then went into their own studio in 1998 to record their debut album Secrets . The album was released on Noiseworks Records . During the recording of the second album Worlds End Kurpanek left the band again, so that the appearance in 1999 on the With Full Force should be the last for him. He was replaced by Jens Maluschka. Worlds End was released on Morbid Records in 2001 and was distributed through SPV . Shortly after the release, Maluschka also left the band and was replaced by John Uhle. Guitarist Enrico Wiechert joined the band with him.

In 2003 singer Hippauf left the band and was replaced by Michael Morgenstern. The third album was released in 2004 with the title Enter New Spheres . The first live DVD, recorded at the 2005 Chronical Moshers Open Air, was released in 2005. At the end of 2006 guitarist Wiechert left the band and was replaced by Maik Richter. The next album Behind the Mask was recorded in this line-up and released in early 2008 on the Reartone Music label. Tours through Germany, Austria , the Netherlands and Switzerland followed . In November 2010 Michael Morgenstern left the group, so that Jeff Sumrell joined the band as a new member. In addition, Patrick Roscher was now represented as an additional guitarist. In 2011 the band changed their name to Xiom.

In 2018 it was renamed Moshquito. The following year the band released a new album called Far Beneath the Tombs .

style

The band played classic thrash metal under the name Moshquito . From the album Behind the Mask and the later renaming of the band to Xiom, it turned into a mixture of Thrash and Progressive - Death Metal , reminiscent of the music of Death .
