Mosteiro is a freguesia (municipality) in the Lajes das Flores district on the Azores island of Flores . It is the smallest municipality on Flores in terms of population.
The village is located in the southwest of the island and is connected to the district town of Lajes via the main road R 1-2 and the island's capital Santa Cruz via the R 2-2 .
Mosteiro was founded in 1676. The place name (German: monastery ) is said to go back to a local tradition and striking rocks that surround the place previously called Mosteiros and can also be found on the nearby coast (see also Mosteiros on São Miguel). The village church Igreja da Santissima Trindade dates from 1846. At that time Mosteiro had around 300 inhabitants. Today's population lives mainly from agriculture .
Above the village there is the impressive basalt formation Rocha dos Bordões . A popular coastal hiking trail (PR 2 FLO) leads from Lajedo via Mosteiro to Fajã Grande .
