Motoko Ishii

Motoko Ishii (born October 15, 1938 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese light designer .

Life

Ishii studied until 1962 at Tokyo University Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku . She then worked in the design department of the lighting company Oy Stockman-Orno Ab in Helsinki and later for the company Licht im Raum in Düsseldorf . In Germany, she also designed for the lighting manufacturer Staff , which was founded in 1945 by Alfred Staff in Lemgo and was one of the German trendsetters in lighting technology.

In 1968 she founded Motoko Ishii Lighting Design Inc. in Tokyo. Ishii has implemented hundreds of lighting projects worldwide, including the Expo '70 in Osaka , the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge (world's longest suspension bridge), the historic village of Shirakawago (World Heritage Site), Tokyo Station , the Tokyo Tower and laser art performances in Vienna and Brussels , a production of Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly , the Shanghai World Financial Center and the illumination of the Brandenburg Gate .

From 1979 she published the publication Light Sensor annually, initially with 12 pages, later with 36 pages. In 2001 she had offices in Tokyo, Los Angeles and Paris. Ishii headed the Japanese Inter Light Forum , which was founded with the aim of promoting the interdisciplinary study of light. In Japan, she was also a member of several government committees, including the Architekturrat the Ministry of Construction , the Council of National Land Agency and the Council for aerospace and electrical engineering science agency .

Honors

In 1969 Ishii received a prize from the Illuminating Engineering Society of Japan for the Diffusion of Lighting project . Numerous national awards followed, such as the Japan Lighting Award from the Illuminating Engineering Society of Japan and the Tokyo Metropolitan Prize of Culture from Tokyo Prefecture. Ishii has also received numerous international awards, including the IES Illumination Award from the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) more than 30 times . In 2006 she was a member of the jury for the Rolex Awards for Enterprise . She is the recipient of the Shiju-hosho (Japanese Order of Honor on the purple ribbon).
