The motorcycle patrol of the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) is an organization of mobile paramedics with the task of providing rapid assistance during the main travel season on motorways or motorway-like country roads.

The motorcycle stripes were founded in 1983 as a test model "Mobile Wache". There are now around 100 motorcycle paramedics (level of training: paramedic , paramedic , paramedic ), spread across 18 locations in Bavaria. Around 300,000 km are covered annually and 11,000 different types of missions are carried out in close cooperation with the rescue services , police , fire brigade and THW . In around 70% of the cases, the patrol arrives at the scene before the regular rescue service.

The motorcycle lanes are a purely voluntary facility within the readiness . The motorcycle lanes are not subject to the Rescue Service Act and rescue service provision, but are called as first responders to accidents if necessary . The alarm is issued via the integrated control center (formerly the rescue control center ) or the police operations center . In disaster control, the motorcycle patrol supports the respective operations management.

History and Development

1983 to 1990

The state committee of the medical columns decides to use "motorcycle strips" to look after travelers on Bavaria's highways. Start of the model test "motorcycle patrol" in Upper Bavaria with 5 emergency vehicles. In 1985 the "motorcycle patrol" campaign was expanded to include northern Bavaria (Central and Lower Franconia) and the campaign was taken over by the DRK regional association of Baden-Württemberg. A total of 10 emergency machines are used. A year later, the DRK regional association of Lower Saxony took over the campaign. Advice and information from the Bavarian Red Cross. Expansion of the "motorcycle patrol" campaign to 15 emergency vehicles in the area of the Bavarian Red Cross. 1987 Takeover of the campaign by the DRK Landesverband Westfalen-Lippe. Training of the emergency services by the Bavarian Red Cross. 1988 first assessment: Since 1984, over 1 million kilometers have been driven. In 1989 the BRK motorcycle patrol counted 17 emergency vehicles.

1991 to 1999

In 1991 the new Bayreuth location was put into operation. Since it was founded in 1984, over 3 million kilometers have been driven in 1998. Women have also been deployed in the BRK motorcycle patrol since 1994. A tragic accident hit the motorcycle patrol in 1995. During an operation, a driver of the BRK motorcycle patrol Augsburg-Land dies and the second driver is critically injured. In 1998 the new Schwandorf site went into operation. Thus 98 motorcyclists and 9 drivers of the supply vehicles are used on Bavaria's autobahn.

2000 to 2008

In 2001, some of the vehicles were out of date. In 2003, 100 drivers are on duty on the motorcycle patrol and 4 new motorcycles can be purchased, two motorcycles can also be used for civil protection. In 2004 the number of vehicles increased to a total of 24 machines, 6 of which were in reserve and the equipment was expanded with AED defibrillators through sponsorship. In 2006 the motorcycle stripes will be used at the soccer world championship. In 2008, the motorcycle stripes were used at the European Football Championship in Austria and the Bayreuth and Erlangen locations received two new machines. At the end of 2008 the radio call names of the motorcycles were changed according to Bavarian guidelines.

Since 2009

In 2009, the motorcycle lanes in Bavaria were appointed to the BRK readiness specialist service. With this step, the motorcycle stripes achieve a new status in the BRK and thus planning security. Central control via the regional office will be given up in 2010. The district and district associations are now taking care of the motorcycle lanes.

The years 2011 and 2012 bring new impetus for the BRK motorcycle patrol: 13 emergency motorcycles are being procured across Bavaria. For the first time, motorcycles in good condition are not bought but new. This means that the vehicle inventory of the older series can be completely replaced. However, the positive trend does not help all locations: the BRK district association Erlangen-Höchstadt is discontinuing its motorcycle patrol after 26 years of activity. KV Bayreuth, based in Bad Berneck, sells a BMW.

In 2013, the flood disaster hit Germany. The BRK motorcycle stripes are in use for weeks in Lower Bavaria. All eight motorcycles from Swabia are in the crisis area. The motorcycles make a decisive contribution to improving various operational situations. New special clothing for motorcyclists is created in Swabia.

education

As so-called solo helpers, the emergency services of the Motorcycle Service are mostly on their own for the first few minutes. For this reason, the BRK places high demands on the helpers.

The driver of an emergency motorcycle not only has to master all emergency situations on the highways, he is also a management assistant, explorer and motorcycle reporter in major incidents and in disaster control.

In the emergency rescue, the motorcycle patrol bridges the time from the event to the arrival of the rescue service as “first responder”. A special situation because the motorcycle patrol does not initially work in a team, as is usual in the rescue service.

All helpers on the motorcycle patrol have already received sufficient medical training and are prepared for their future work in terms of driving and organization in a special specialist course. The specialization takes place in a basic and a technical course. In the specialist course, the emergency services receive their necessary specialist training in order to then be able to carry out the sub-areas of rescue, reconnaissance and situation reporting tasks, short-term leadership in special cases and general activities as a management assistant.

Basic training

  • Basic course : 16 teaching units at site level
  • Specialized course: 32 teaching units with the content of law studies, behavior in action, business game, intensive motorcycle training, driving in an association as well as practical training with realistic case simulations.

Advanced training

In the training courses are dealt with

  • Resuscitation after Megacode training (annually with certificate)
  • Instructions on the use of special rights in road traffic (annually)
  • Emergency psychosocial care
  • current topics from emergency medicine
  • Operations management in the rescue service
  • Trauma management

equipment

The emergency machines are vehicles from BMW in the official version. BMW motorcycles of the type BMW R 1200 RT are currently in use . In addition to the radio, the patrol can be reached via mobile phone and radio receiver for the control centers.
