Motupiko is a small settlement in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located around 43 km southwest of Nelson in the valley of the Motupiko River . The river flows into the Motueka River about 2 km northeast . To the west of the settlement rise the Pinchback Range up to 643 m high . The New Zealand State Highway 6 runs through Motupiko and connects the settlement with the next larger settlement Belgrove , around 12 km east and on to Nelson .
history
In 1890, the Midland Railway Company began building the Nelson Railway from Belgrove to Motupiko . After the construction of the 1352 m long tunnel through the Spooner Range, the section was opened in 1897 and further built in 1901 via Tapawera to Tadmor. After several expansions in the following years , the line was finally closed to Gowanbridge on September 3, 1955 and then dismantled.
