The Mount Field National Park (English Mount Field National Park ) is a national park in the Australian state of Tasmania . He is best known for the Russell Falls .
Mount Mawson , located in the national park, is one of the safest ski areas in Tasmania alongside Ben Lomond .
geography
The national park is about 159 km² and is located about 65 km northwest of the capital Hobart . In it lie u. a. the Mount Field West .
vegetation
The park is characterized by a special variety of vegetation. In addition to forest areas with tall swamp gums, a species of eucalyptus , there are giant tree ferns , rainforest and alpine vegetation in the higher areas. Some of the trees, which are up to 400 years old, are 90 m high and 20 m in circumference.
Wildlife
The vast majority of the land and arboreal mammal species native to Tasmania are found in the national park. The spotted sacred marten and the Tasmanian long-nosed sacrum are endangered species . The last known Tasmanian tiger was caught in the area.
history
The national park was founded on August 29, 1916 and is the oldest national park in Tasmania with the Freycinet National Park.
