The Savage River National Park (English: Savage River National Park ) is a protected area on the Australian island of Tasmania . It is located about 233 km northwest of Hobart , has an area of ​​almost 18,000 hectares and was placed under protection in 1999.

General

The Savage River National Park was established as part of the Regional Forestry Agreement to keep this area undisturbed and untouched. Therefore there are no buildings for visitors in the park and no roads leading into the park. Only a few slopes lead around the park and allow limited access to this ecosystem. The park corresponds to about 5% of Tarkine , one of the largest areas of temperate rainforest in Australia.

The Baretop Ridge , a low mountain range, forms the eastern edge of the park .

The national park represents an unfragmented and intact wilderness in which the ecological processes can run largely unaffected by human influences. It has a high diversity of native species with only minor impairments.

Rivers

The eponymous Savage River , which flows to the southwest, and the Lyons River , which takes its way north, have their source on the western edge of the park . The Keith River begins in the center and also flows north. The springs of the Heazlewood River , which flows parallel to the Savage River, to the southwest lie on the southern boundary of the park .

Flora and fauna

The richness of the park's flora is reflected, for example, in B. reflected in the variety of species of lower plants: There were u. a. 239 species of moss , of which 93 mosses and 146 liverworts were found.

22 species of mammals have been identified in the park, including u. a. the Tasmanian devil , the predatory species Swainson's broad-footed pouch mouse and the Australian wide-toothed rat, as well as five species of bat.

Among the 62 documented bird species are the macaw eagle , the swallow- tailed parakeet and the white-browed hawk .

Although the park has not yet been systematically examined for amphibians and reptiles, five reptile and three amphibian species have been observed so far. a. the frogs Litoria burrowsae and Crinia tasmaniensis, which are endemic to Tasmania .
