National parks in Australia
There are several hundred national parks in Australia . Most of them are subordinate to the governments of the respective states; only a small number of parks are managed by the Federal Government's Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities .

Northern Territory
National parks
In 1924 Cobourg, now known as Garig Gunak Barlu National Park, was declared the first national park in the Northern Territory . Today there are 20 national parks in the Northern Territory with a total area of 5,931,645 hectares, which is about 4.41% of the total area of the state. With 17,856,492 hectares (about 13.25%) a far larger part is designated as Indigenous Protected Area , i.e. protected areas under the administration of the indigenous population.

Queensland
In March 2008, the Queensland government announced that it would expand the area of the national parks from 5 percent of the country's area to 7.5 percent by 2020. In addition, the total area of the protected areas is to be expanded to a total of 20 million hectares in the same period, including, for example, Conservation Parks , Forest Reserves and Nature Refuges .
