The Mount Richmond National Park is a national park in the southwest of the Australian state of Victoria , 313 kilometers west of Melbourne and 75 km southeast of Mount Gambier . Mount Richmond is an extinct volcano on the edge of Discovery Bay that long ago was covered with sand blown up from this bay. The land around the old volcano is flat and at sea level.

Origin of name and establishment of the park

The mountain and later the national park were named after Richmond Henty , one of the first children of European descent to be born in the Portland area.

The park was established in 1960 in memory of local naturalists such as Noel Learmonth and Cliff Beauglehole .

vegetation

On the barren, sandy soil of the basalt mountain , the vegetation was only sparsely and slowly able to gain a foothold. Today the park is covered with eucalyptus forest , heathland and scattered swamps. The eucalyptus species Brown Stringybark and Manna Gum can be found in the summit region , while Peppermint and Swamp Gum have spread in the wetter, lower regions . The forests and heathlands are full of flowering plants all year round, including 50 species of orchids .

Wildlife

Koalas , kangaroos , wallabies and echins , but also the rabbit kangaroo , a particularly rare and small, nocturnal species of kangaroo , live in the Mount Richmond National Park . The very rare long-billed lacquer bird is also native to this park. In sunny places you can also find the copper-headed adders and tiger otters.

In the swamps you can find emus , pennant parakeets , cockatoos and currawongs (strepera), but also smaller birds such as the honey eater .
