The Warby Ovens National Park is a national park in the north of the Australian state of Victoria , 212 km northeast of Melbourne and 16 km northwest of Wangaratta . The national park was created in 2010 from the Warby Range State Park through the addition of the Killawara Forest and the unregulated lower reaches of the Ovens River . Accordingly, there are three areas in the national park: The granite mountains and sparse forests of the Warby Range , eucalyptus forests of the species Box-Ironbark in the Killawara Forest and Redgum forests and wetlands along the Ovens River.

history

On his expeditions in 1836, Thomas Livingstone Mitchell initially named today's Warby Range Futters Range . The mountain range got its current name after Ben Warby , who took over the Taminick Run with 9,300 hectares in 1844 .

The highest point in these mountains is Mount Glenrowan at only 515 m, but from there you can see the country in the south well. This was used by muggers like Ned Kelly and thus had a good hiding place from which they could overlook the small town of Glenrowan .

In 1979 the Warby Range State Park was established. In 2002 the Killawara Forest and the Boweya Forest were added. In 2010, these parks were expanded to include the banks of the still unregulated lower reaches of the Ovens River and the entire area was declared a national park.

Wildlife

The eastern gray giant kangaroo and the swamp wallaby can be found in the lower elevations .

Reptiles find ideal places to sunbathe on the granite slabs of the mountains. Many birds, such as eagles, parrots and owls, also inhabit the higher regions of the park.
