The Mornington Peninsula National Park is located in the south of the Australian state of Victoria , 77 km south of Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsula .

The park is one of the most popular in Victoria, as it and its neighboring parks, Point Nepean National Park and Arthur's Seat State Park, protect many of the region's natural attractions and thus preserve a habitat for many wild animals. The park covers most of the southwest coast of the Mornington Peninsula.

Beach grass , grassy, ​​light forests, banksia forests , heathland , alluvial forests and marshland can be found on the coastal strip .

Animal life

There are 32 species of mammals, 167 species of birds, 22 species of reptiles, seven species of amphibians and two species of fish in the national park. Of particular note is a large population of the eastern gray giant kangaroo in Greens Bush . White-footed narrow-foot bag mice ( Sminthopsis leucopus ), bandicoots , black wallabies , honey-eaters , blue-winged parrots and plovers ( hooded plover , Thinornis rubricollis) are also found.

history

Aborigines settled this coast thousands of years ago. You can still find some Køkkenmøddinger with mussel shells today.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Ocean Beach Reserve near Sorrento was built and some hiking trails and shelters were created. The Cape Schank Coastal Park was established in 1975 and opened to the public in 1988 as Point Nepean National Park , an area at Point Nepean that was closed for over 100 years. In 1995, the park was split up and most of it became the Mornington Peninsula National Park , while the historic site at Point Nepean was made Point Nepean National Park in 2005 .
