The Brisbane Ranges National Park is a national park in the south of the Australian state of Victoria , 57 km west of Melbourne and 45 km southeast of Ballarat . This 7.7781 hectare area was placed under protection in 1975.

Tourist facilities

The park protects part of the Brisbane Range , a low hill country that is accessed by a number of hiking trails. The paths to Anakie Gorge , the Ted Errey Nature Circuit and the Wadawurrung Walk are the best known, although the path to Anakie Gorge is not very steep and is also suitable for children and the elderly. There are several rest areas and campsites.

animals and plants

About 619 native plant species have been identified in the park so far. That's about a quarter of all species in the state of Victoria. Many of these species are rare or occur here far from their actual range. A Grevillea species ( Grevilleasteiglitziana ) only occurs in this national park. Other rare species include a. Olearia pannosa and Grevillea chrysophaea . In spring, the grass trees , acacias and a whole range of orchid species are also particularly noticeable.

Notable mammal species include a. the Eastern Gray Giant Kangaroo , wallabies , Echidna , possums and short-headed gliding pouches and koalas . Of the 180 documented bird species, the yellow-headed honey eater and the bearded night swallow Eurostopodus mystacalis are particularly rare. Other species that occur are the peregrine falcon and the rainbow spint .

history

Originally the Wathaurong Aboriginal tribe lived in this area .

The first European settlers invaded the area around 1840. As early as 1843, most of today's national park had been taken over by them. The actual pasture areas, however, were concentrated in the east of the Brisbane Ranges and the area around the Moorabool River. Nevertheless, this use of the area was sufficient to change the vegetation so permanently that the Wathaurung lost its nutritional basis: as early as 1863, only 30 members of this tribe were counted.

Gold was first found in 1853, which led to a temporary influx of people. By 1890 there were 79 gold mines and around 2,500 residents by the middle of the decade. However, this number fell to around 150 within just ten years and in 1907 only one gold mine was still profitable.

Bush fire

On January 16, 2006, a lightning strike triggered a forest fire in the Steiglitz Historical Park (in the south of the national park), which soon spread across the entire Brisbane Ranges. Despite extensive efforts to extinguish the fire, the fire destroyed 6,700 hectares of parking area, but only destroyed two houses and there were no fatalities.
