The Cobboboonee National Park is a national park in the southwest of the Australian state of Victoria , about 300 km west of Melbourne and about 65 km southeast of Mount Gambier .

The park, which was called Cobboboonee State Forest until 2009 , adjoins the Lower Glenelg National Park to the east . The Fitzroy River rises from the swamps in the park .

flora

In the park there are acacia forests of the species Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon), heathland and swamps. There are also tree ferns and many types of mushrooms in the forests .

fauna

There are several threatened species of owl ( Powerful Owl , Masked Owl ) in the forests . In the marshes, the Marsh bag mouse (see Antechinus minimus ) and the Sumpfskink ( Swamp Skink ). In addition, you can meet the spotted pouch marten , the long-nosed rabbit kangaroo , bats ( bent-winged bat ), the yellow-bellied glider , the kingfisher , the bandicoot , wallabies and the eastern gray kangaroo .

Culture

The country was formerly inhabited by the Gunditjmara Aboriginal people. Even today there are many of their places of worship in the park.

Leisure activities and facilities

There are hiking trails in the park with a total length of 250 km. You can also explore the park on horseback on a 60 km long bridle path. Several picnic areas are equipped with toilets and a barbecue area.
