The Kara Kara National Park , formerly St. Arnaud Range National Park is a national park in the center of the Australian state of Victoria , 190 km northwest of Melbourne and 30 km south of St. Arnaud .

Flora and fauna

The St. Arnaud Range is covered with dense, but also loose, dry eucalyptus forest. Particularly noteworthy are the old, tall trees, which provide nesting holes for many species of birds, such as B. the Jägerlieste and the Pennant Parakeet , but also for the yellow-footed pouch mouse and the short-headed glider pouch .

history

Notched trees and stone artefacts tell of the settlement of the later park area by Aborigines . More details about their life there are not known.

The first European settlers came in the 1840s and used the area as pasture for their flocks of sheep. The land also served as a source of timber. Agricultural use continued until 1995.

Gold seekers arrived around 1860, but only some superficial gold was found in watercourses and shallow tunnels. The remains of the mining activity can still be seen in the park today.

In 1900 the construction of the Teddington reservoirs began . First a lake was created for the drinking water supply of St. Arnaud . In 1929 a second reservoir was added. In 1947 the lakes lost their importance for the water supply of the medium-sized town and since then have only served to supply the nearby small town of Stuart Mill with drinking and agricultural water.

The area was only declared a national park by the state government of Victoria in 2002 and covers 13,900 hectares. There, the former Kara Kara State Park and most of the St Arnaud Range State Forest are combined.
