The Peak Charles National Park is a 400 square kilometer national park in the south of Western Australia , Australia .

location

The park is 140 kilometers northwest of Esperance and 110 kilometers southwest of Norseman . It can be reached via unpaved slopes from the Coolgardie-Esperance Highway . The road to the campsite in the park is passable with normal vehicles, all other tracks in the park require a four-wheel drive vehicle .

The center of the park is the 651 m high Peak Charles . Just like its neighbor, the 501 m high Peak Eleanora , it is made of fine, orange-colored granite . Together they rise from an area with dry woodland, heather-covered sand plains and a system of salt lakes .

Climb

The Peak Charles is mainly known to climbers . The date of the first ascent is unknown. The first routes were taken in the 1960s, and since the 1980s the area around Peak Charles has been systematically developed for climbers. At the moment (as of 2009) over 200 routes are described, from very easy tours to demanding climbing in the ninth degree of difficulty (according to the UIAA scale) .
