The Shannon National Park is a 530 km² park in the southwest of Western Australia , Australia .

location

The park is 55 km south of Manjimup and 68 km northeast of Walpole on the South Western Highway . It covers the upper reaches of the Shannon River from its source about 50 km downstream. The lower reaches with the confluence with the Southern Ocean lie in the adjacent D'Entrecasteaux National Park .

history

Because of its inaccessibility, the area around the Shannon River was one of the last to be opened for logging. Until the 1940s, the area was almost untouched by humans. Only then did the shortage of wood, caused by the Second World War, lead to a sawmill being built. You can still see traces of the old sawmill - it was closed and demolished in 1968 - and the surrounding houses near the visitor center and the campsite. The old lumberjack roads now serve as roads and hiking trails. The national park was established in December 1988.

Flora and fauna

Despite the logging, there are old stands of carribrees ( Eucalyptus diversicolor ), which grow alongside jarrah ( Eucalyptus marginata ) and marri trees ( Corymbia calophylla ), especially in the northern part of the park. Further south, old Jarrah forests, banks , heathlands and wetlands predominate.

Shannon National Park is home to 20 species of mammals, at least 120 species of birds, 28 reptiles and 15 amphibians.
